Panning for gold

One of the activities at Old Poway Park is panning for gold in Rattlesnake Creek.

All you need to do is bring a pie pan (we'll have lots of those after the pumpkin pies are all gone!), dip it in the sand, and swish it all around.

Is that gold??

YAY! They both found a little bit! Now we are RICH!!

OK, well, maybe not. This is actually a once a year event, the Rendevous, which portrays life in the 1800's. There isn't any gold in Rattlesnake Creek either. And it really isn't gold, but iron pyrite, otherwise known as Fools Gold, that was brough in just for the Rendevous. The kids had fun panning though!

  1. oh sooo much fun. my dad use to take us panning when we were kids. Haven't done that since we went to alaska, though I have been doing some garnet digging. its fun like this with kids that is so much more educational than sitting in front of a tv.

  2. That looks like so much fun! Glad to see you collected some gold (even if it was fools gold!) Love the framing with the tree!
